Are Tires Sold Online Genuine, or Could They Be Retreads?

Knowing how to spot fake tires before purchase is an essential skill for anyone buying outside of a franchised dealership. The concern is legitimate: on third-party marketplaces, pricing is sometimes structured to move counterfeit or substandard stock, and the question of whether online tires are genuine cannot always be answered by looking at product photos alone.

The most reliable verification method is the DOT code molded into the tire sidewall. Tire DOT code verification works as follows: the code begins with “DOT” and ends with four digits representing the production week and year. A tire showing “2423” was made in the 24th week of 2023. Genuine tires from authorized distributors will have a complete, legible DOT code; inconsistencies or partial codes are a serious warning sign.

Additional protection steps: purchase only from sellers listed as authorized dealers on the brand’s official website, inspect the DOT code immediately upon delivery, and treat any price more than 20–25% below market average with strong suspicion. Retreaded tires, while legal for specific commercial applications, must be legally labeled as such and cannot be sold as new passenger tires in most regulated markets. A deal that cannot be explained by a legitimate promotional reason almost always reflects a compromised product.
